What Do DJs Need from a Soundboard App?
- Zero latency triggering pre-loaded audio buffers for instant response
- Hold mode sound plays only while the pad is pressed
- MIDI controller support USB and Bluetooth via CoreMIDI
- Pitch shifting 24 semitones, two modes: pitch and speed
- Audio ducking auto-lowers other pads when a trigger fires
A custom soundboard app serves DJs who carry their own sample libraries: vocal drops, air horns, sirens, risers, impacts, and transition sweeps. These sounds define the DJ's style and are not interchangeable with pre-loaded meme libraries.
The distinction between a DJ soundboard and a DJ mixing app is important. LitPads is a soundboard for triggering one-shot samples and effects alongside a DJ mix. LitPads is not a DJ mixer. It does not have a crossfader, BPM sync, or beat matching. DJs use LitPads alongside their existing DJ software or hardware.
Why Is Hold Mode Essential for DJs?
Hold mode combined with a DJ-focused soundboard workflow replicates the behavior of hardware sampler pads. Press the pad for the buildup, release at the drop. Press for the siren, release before the next transition. The physical feel of holding and releasing a pad creates a performance dynamic that One Shot or Toggle modes cannot replicate.
LitPads supports Hold mode on all platforms: touch on iPad and iPhone, click on Mac, or MIDI Note On/Note Off messages from connected controllers. MIDI velocity sensitivity scales the volume based on hit intensity, so softer hits produce quieter effects.
How Does MIDI Controller Support Help DJs?
MIDI integration through CoreMIDI requires no special permissions and auto-detects devices with hot-plugging. DJs who already have a MIDI controller on their setup (Akai, Native Instruments, Novation, Arturia) connect it to LitPads and map notes to pads in seconds. The beat maker soundboard guide covers MIDI mapping strategies for hardware controllers in detail.
All connected MIDI sources are monitored simultaneously. A DJ using both a pad controller and a keyboard can trigger different pads from each device without switching input sources.
How Does Pitch Shifting Work for DJ Samples?
Fine tuning adjusts pitch by plus or minus 50 cents for precise tuning between semitones. A vocal drop recorded in C can be shifted to match a track playing in E flat without re-recording or editing the file externally. Quick preset buttons at common intervals (-12, -5, 0, +5, +12 semitones) speed up adjustments.
Speed mode is the classic sampler effect: pitch up for chipmunk vocals, pitch down for deep slowed effects. DJs use speed mode creatively to transform familiar samples into new sounds during a set. The drum pad app guide covers pitch shifting techniques for performance in more detail.
How Does Audio Ducking Work During a DJ Set?
The ducking setup for a DJ board: mark ambient loop pads as normal, mark vocal drops and effect pads as duck triggers, and optionally mark a click track pad as duck exempt. The duck amount is adjustable from 5% to 80%, and the fade time from 0.05 to 2.0 seconds. Faster fade times suit punchy effects, slower times suit musical transitions.
Ducking only affects pads on the same board and only in Layer mode. Different boards remain completely independent. A DJ using one board for ambient loops and another board for one-shot effects can configure ducking on the ambient board without affecting the effects board.
Can DJs Use LitPads on iPad at a Gig?
The iPad version supports all audio features: per-pad EQ, pitch shifting, stereo pan, fade in/out, all play modes, and audio ducking. iPad does not support global hotkeys (a macOS-only feature) or MIDI over USB without a camera connection kit adapter. Bluetooth MIDI controllers connect directly.
Background playback keeps audio running when the app moves to the background or the device locks. Lock screen controls show play/pause/stop and the current board name, giving DJs quick access without unlocking the iPad during a set.
How Much Does a DJ Soundboard App Cost?
LitPads Free is enough for DJs who need basic one-shot triggering without audio processing. Pro is recommended for DJs who need MIDI controller support, pitch shifting to match keys, and audio ducking for clean drops over loops. The $14.99 price is less than the cost of one drink at most venues where DJs perform.
No other soundboard app combines Hold mode, MIDI velocity sensitivity, pitch shifting, and audio ducking at any price point. Soundboard Studio at $159.99 does not offer any of these features. Farrago at $29 does not offer any of these features.
Marcel Iseli is an indie developer, DJ, and music producer with over 20 years behind the decks and in the studio. Rooted in hip hop culture, he collects drum machines, samplers, and vintage audio gear. LitPads grew out of that obsession: decades of triggering samples on hardware led him to build the software equivalent he always wanted.
