How Does a Keyboard Soundboard Work?
The difference between in-app keyboard shortcuts and global hotkeys is critical. In-app shortcuts work only when the soundboard window has focus. Global hotkeys work from any application. Streamers need global hotkeys because the game has focus during gameplay. Presenters need global hotkeys because the presentation software has focus during the talk.
What Keys Can You Use as Soundboard Triggers?
Function keys (F1 through F12) are the safest choice for gaming and streaming because they rarely conflict with game controls or application shortcuts. The keys are physically grouped at the top of the keyboard, making them easy to reach without disrupting hand position on WASD or the mouse.
Ctrl+number combos (Ctrl+1 through Ctrl+9) provide nine additional trigger points for users who need more sounds than the 12 function keys allow. Ctrl+letter combos work but risk conflicts with application shortcuts (Ctrl+C for copy, Ctrl+V for paste). The global hotkeys setup guide covers conflict avoidance strategies in detail.
How Do You Assign Keyboard Shortcuts to Soundboard Pads?
- Open Pad Settings gear icon in Edit mode
- Press the Record button enters key listening mode
- Press the desired key or combo binding saved immediately
- Shortcut displays on the pad visible at a glance
The assignment process takes two seconds per pad. Open Pad Settings (gear icon in Edit mode), scroll to the hotkey section, press Record, press the key. Done. No configuration files, no manual editing, no restart required. Conflicts with existing system shortcuts are detected and flagged before saving.
Hotkeys disable automatically when the cursor is in any text field, search bar, or editable area within LitPads. Typing pad names, cue notes, or search queries does not trigger sounds. Hotkeys re-enable the moment the cursor leaves the text field.
What Is the Best Keyboard Layout for a Soundboard?
Streamers should avoid keys used by their primary game. WASD, space, shift, tab, escape, and number keys 1 through 5 are commonly bound to game actions. Function keys are almost never used by games, making them the safest default for streaming soundboards.
Presenters can use letter keys since presentation software (Keynote, PowerPoint) does not bind to individual letters. Assign A for applause, L for laughter, B for buzzer. The mnemonic connection between the letter and the sound helps remember assignments during high-pressure presentations. The gaming soundboard guide covers key binding strategies specifically for gaming workflows.
Do Keyboard Hotkeys Work Alongside MIDI Controllers?
Assign both a keyboard hotkey and a MIDI note to the same pad for a backup trigger method. Switch between keyboard and hardware controller depending on the situation.
A streamer using keyboard hotkeys during gameplay can switch to a MIDI pad controller between games for a more tactile experience. A musician performing on stage with a MIDI controller can fall back to keyboard hotkeys if the controller loses its Bluetooth connection. The Mac soundboard comparison covers which competing apps support dual keyboard and MIDI triggers.
Marcel Iseli is an indie developer, DJ, and music producer with over 20 years behind the decks and in the studio. Rooted in hip hop culture, he collects drum machines, samplers, and vintage audio gear. LitPads grew out of that obsession: decades of triggering samples on hardware led him to build the software equivalent he always wanted.
